Privacy Policy
Last updated 28 September 2026
IKKIO describes the world for people who are blind or visually impaired. To do that, the IKKIO app has to look at what you look at and listen to what you ask. We know how personal that is. This policy explains, in plain language, what personal data we collect, why, who we share it with and the choices you have.
This policy covers our website (www.ikkio.ai), our waitlist and newsletter, and the IKKIO mobile app and related services (together, the "Service").
1. Who is responsible for your data
The data controller is:
- IKKIO Oy
- Business ID: 3518608-7
- Address: Hämeentie 135 A c/o Helsinki XR Center, 00560, Helsinki, Finland
- Privacy contact: info@ikkio.ai
2. The short version
- Camera images and voice requests are processed to answer you in real time. We do not keep a history of what you see, and we do not sell your data.
- Features that remember things about you — such as your preferences, routines or the faces of people you choose to save — are optional and can be switched off or deleted at any time.
- Our website does not use advertising or analytics cookies.
- You can ask us for a copy of your data, or ask us to delete it, at any time.
3. What we collect and why
When you visit our website
- Technical data such as IP address, browser type and the pages you request are processed by our hosting provider to deliver and secure the website. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a secure website.
- Theme preference.If you switch between light and dark mode, your choice is stored in your browser's local storage. It never leaves your device.
When you join the waitlist or newsletter
We collect your email address (and any other details you choose to give) so we can send you early-access invitations and product news. The form is provided by Beehiiv, which stores subscriber data on our behalf. Legal basis: your consent. You can unsubscribe with the link in every email.
When you contact us
If you email us, we use your name, email address and message to reply and to provide support. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering you, or performance of our contract with you if you are a user.
When you use the IKKIO app
- Account data — for example your name, email address, language and settings. Used to create and run your account. Legal basis: performance of our contract with you.
- Camera images and video frames from your smart glasses or phone, captured when you ask IKKIO to describe something. They are processed to generate a description and are not stored after your request is answered, unless you explicitly choose to save or share them.
- Voice commands and audio, converted to text so IKKIO can understand your request. Audio is not kept after it has been processed.
- Personalisation ("memory") — preferences, routines and notes IKKIO learns so you have to explain less. This is optional, visible to you in the app and can be edited or deleted.
- Face recognition — if you choose to enable it, IKKIO can recognise people you have saved. This creates biometric data. It is off by default, is only used for the people you add, and you can remove a person or turn the feature off at any time.
- Device and usage data — such as device model, connected glasses, app version, crash reports and feature usage. Used to keep the Service working, fix bugs and improve performance. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in providing a reliable service.
Sensitive data
Using an app built for people with visual impairment may reveal information about your health, and face recognition involves biometric data. These are "special categories" of data under the GDPR. We only process them with your explicit consent, which we ask for in the app before the relevant feature is used. You can withdraw consent at any time in the app settings or by contacting us; this does not affect processing that happened before.
People around you
The camera may capture other people. We do not use these images to identify anyone unless you have enabled face recognition and saved that person yourself. Please only save people who have agreed to it.
4. How we use AI
IKKIO combines on-device processing with cloud-based AI models, some of which are provided by third-party AI companies acting as our processors. We only send them what is needed to answer your request, and we require by contract that they do not use your data to train their own models.
We do not use your images, audio or conversations to train or improve AI models unless you opt in to do so. You can change this choice at any time.
5. Who we share data with
We never sell your personal data. We share it only with:
- Service providers who process data on our behalf under a data processing agreement — for example cloud hosting, AI model providers, email and newsletter tools (Beehiiv), and crash reporting.
- Smart glasses manufacturers.When you connect glasses such as Ray-Ban Meta or Brilliant Labs Frame, the manufacturer's own app and privacy policy also apply to data handled by their devices and software.
- Authorities, when we are legally required to.
- A buyer or successor, if IKKIO is involved in a merger or acquisition. This policy would continue to apply to your data.
6. International transfers
We aim to store and process data within the European Economic Area. Where a service provider processes data outside the EEA, we rely on an adequacy decision of the European Commission (such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework) or on the Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, together with additional safeguards where needed.
7. How long we keep data
- Camera images and audio: only for as long as it takes to answer your request.
- Memory and saved faces: until you delete them or close your account.
- Account data: for as long as your account is active, and deleted within 30 days after you close it.
- Waitlist and newsletter: until you unsubscribe.
- Support emails: up to 24 months after the conversation ends.
- Server logs and crash reports: up to 90 days.
We may keep some data longer where the law requires it, for example accounting records.
8. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you and get a copy of it;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data deleted;
- restrict or object to our processing;
- receive your data in a portable format;
- withdraw your consent at any time.
To use your rights, email info@ikkio.ai. We will reply within one month. You can also delete your account and data directly in the app.
If you think we have handled your data incorrectly, you can complain to the Finnish Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman (tietosuoja.fi) or to the data protection authority in your own country. We would appreciate the chance to fix things first, so please contact us.
9. Cookies
Our website does not use advertising, tracking or analytics cookies. The only thing we store in your browser is your light/dark theme choice. The waitlist form is embedded from Beehiiv, which may set cookies needed for the form to work; see Beehiiv's privacy policy for details.
10. Security
We protect data with encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, and by processing on-device where possible. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your data safe and will notify you and the authorities of a data breach where the law requires it.
11. Children
The Service is not intended for children under 13. Users under 18 may only use IKKIO with the permission of a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has given us personal data without permission, please contact us and we will delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as IKKIO develops. We will post the new version here and change the date at the top. If the changes are significant, we will also tell you in the app or by email before they take effect.
